賴比瑞亞醫療官凱泰（Francis Kateh）今天說，賴比瑞亞中北部一輛油罐車翻覆後民眾上前搶裝漏油，但油罐車不久後發生爆炸，造成至少40人死亡，另有數十人嚴重灼傷送醫。
綜合路透社與非洲新聞網站All Africa報導，這輛油罐車昨晚在下朋恩郡（Lower Bong County）托托塔（Totota）發生車禍，車子偏離道路側翻，不久後發生爆炸，造成許多跑到現場取油的民眾死亡與受傷。

一名警官說：「有些人跑到那裡從油罐車上取油，在這個過程中油罐車發生爆炸。」
凱泰告訴記者，目前仍有數十人因嚴重灼傷在醫院治療，死亡人數可能還會攀升。
根據聯合國數據，道路安全狀況不佳與基礎建設薄弱，讓撒哈拉沙漠以南非洲（sub-Saharan Africa）成為全球車禍致死率最高的地區，死亡率約是歐洲平均的3倍。
