颱風山陀兒來勢洶洶，美國海、空軍聯合颱風警報中心（Joint Typhoon Warning Center）指山陀兒是「超級颱風」（Super Typhoon），在大西洋相當於4級颶風；日本放送協會（NHK）報導山陀兒正以緩慢速度向西北偏西移動，預計3日登陸台灣。

紐時報導，根據聯合颱風警報中心（Joint Typhoon Warning Center），山陀兒於台灣時間10月1日清晨增強為超級颱風；持續風速達到每小時150英里，約每小時241公里；在大西洋地區等同於4級颶風。

美國東南部9月底才遭4級颶風海倫（Hurricane Helene）侵襲，至今造成128人死亡，上百人失蹤。

另外，NHK指出，目前山陀兒中心氣壓約915百帕，中心附近最大風速為55公尺，最大瞬間風速為75公尺；預計3日登陸台灣。
